Three years ago, Jannes Vertommen installed a system to grow microalgae in his parents' tomato greenhouse in Sint-Katelijne-Waver. To make room for it, his father Mark sacrificed quite a few square meters of tomato plants. Spirulina is a green saltwater algae that contains a lot of proteins, vitamins and minerals. Because of its healthy nutrients, spirulina is interesting to add to your diet.
Jannes is the fourth generation at the Rijtak company. What started with leeks and cauliflowers, grew into a company of 5 ha greenhouses with peppers, tomatoes and now also microalgae. Jannes did not finish his studies at the agricultural and horticultural school in Geel, but it was there that he came into contact with microalgae during a lesson. He was immediately fascinated and the cultivation remained in his mind for a few years.
